I think she was talking to a friend of hers up the stairs before parting with her as she heads off to get her phone. It did seem hard to tell who she was talking to. Would be funny if she just abandoned her phone pretending it isn't hers anymore out of embarrassment though but i dont think that's it lol

Ok, guys, I've never went mountain hiking before, so please correct me if I'm wrong about this:

Aren't the hiking tracks always kind of marked on the ground? It's usually paved from what I know. It is shown paved under their feet in the anime.
So basically,Weren't they going to get to their starting point if they just went back following the same tracks they came through?
The whole idea of being "lost" whilst walking on a marked & paved tracks kind of doesn't work for me.

I don't know. Let me know what you guys think.

What they call mountains just seems to be hills since they are on a very large mountain I assume. They usually are just gravel paved but on flatter land they can be only dirt. At the Y fork in the path the right-hand path taken was not so covered in gravel then becomes just dirt trail and the trail opened up so less of a clear trail actually there. But still they clearly on a trail and couldn't be that lost unless there was a lot of other side trails along the way. It was overdramatic but it also doesn't seem entirely unrealistic to think if they didn't know their way around they would worry missing the bus so it would be technically lost, then once it's described as being "lost" panic results from group dynamics and build it up to be more an issue than it really is.

Yeah, I agree that losing the bus would be a pain in the butt & that it basically was more of a mass hysteria than actually really lost.

You can absolutely get lost on a marked and paved trail. Yes, you're on a trail, but which trail? If you don't know where you are and which direction you're headed, you could be going down a 6-hour, expert-difficulty trail that takes you somewhere far away from the bus...

Also, yes, you could backtrack to a fork in the road, but mountain trails often have many forks; how would you know which of these forks is where you took a wrong turn?

But regardless, it's ridiculous that no one in this group tries to figure out where they are and decide what to do, other than start blaming Ishimori. No one else has a map, and no one asks to take a look at Ishimori's map?

Not to mention no one brought an umbrella or a raincoat, when they knew they were going mountain hiking... Now that I mention it, why are they even in their school uniforms? Ishimori's the only one in gym clothes. Aren't they going to get sweaty?

I laughed out loud when there was that one girl who burst into tears, literally crying, "I wanna go home! Mommyyy!" It was like a comedy bit. Are they high-school students or grade-schoolers??

Besides, the whole situation is silly... Why would that jealous girl make herself lost along with the group, just to make Ishimori look bad? Does she secretly know where to go, and that's why she's not worried?

How did she pull off that sign-tampering in the first place? Did she run ahead of the group for a bit and pulled out a prepared sign and tape that she brought all the way from home to change the sign?

So many weird story moments and characters... It's hard to stop.

Why is his tall friend trying to keep them apart? Does he have feelings for Uka now? I'm a little unclear on this part.
And that Classmate's apology sounded not only slow, but not very sincere. Or maybe she just realized it was all futile anyway. She should have gotten into a butt load of trouble for that little stunt. Oh well, envy isn't called a Green-eyed Monster for no reason.
@Sheol01 yeah i really wondered about that too. he seemed very supportive just untill that moment. I kinda dont get his behaviour either. I seemed like the "mentor" character who always has the perfect life lesson for everyone. but this one i didnt get? did it have a deeper meaning, because i kinda cant believe he is in love with ishi too, because they hardly intereacted didnt they?

kinda strange. we will see

@Inexplicable well she got bullied without end on her past school.
she has a highly fragile mental state. and since she got bullied so much, she always sees the negative aspects in everything, which is a completly normal reaction of people who were vicitims of bullying.

i think she is portrayed kinda realistic and hey: i guess we will see some characater development of her in the future. but her starting point was kinda rough.. of course she is insecure, especialy with a popular boy like him..

@sarybelle you really didnt understand her character in the slightest did you?

her mental state was highly damaged by the bullying in middle school. she is insecure beyond anything because of that.
i think she is portrayed kinda realistic and in character all the time. she is believable for me.

@Wrathberry84 Yes I understand her character perfectly well. That doesn’t mean that her crying 10+ times about every minuscule thing and running out of the classroom every episode isn’t annoying. Insecure fine, understandable. Four episodes of constant crying is already old

Oh my goodness. I didn't think I would dislike a protagonist this season more than Miyo from My Happy Marriage, yet here we are...what is with these shoujo tropes where the female is so fragile and shy, while the male love interest is her knight in shining armor. It's only been four episodes, but how many times has she already been shown running away and crying lmao. Literally the last thing you're supposed to do when you're lost is separating from the group. At least she found the way out and it didn't go down that cliche route where the two main characters are alone and lost outside in the rain, but I really hope there comes a time when Kai doesn't go after her and she could take action by herself. And somehow she thinks she's "doing her best" when she doesn't even try to utter a single word out while others are sharing their yearbooks. Usually I'm sympathetic to these kinds of characters and look forward to watching their character development, but I can't with her.

New girl rival incoming. Please don't be an asshole...and get your phone back girl.
@Xiao

you say you hate "miyo" too and then say: "i normaly sympathize with this kinda of characters xD your argument seems broken here xD.

you just do not seem to like the introvert shy girl. also both miyo and her are both in a very fragile mental state because of the bullying they endured.
kinda similar characters, i agree.

but miyo already had some great character development and i have that ishi will have some too in the future :)

@sarybelle constant crying is a little much xD

i mean think about it: she basicaly had no interaction with anyone in middle school. besides negative ones when she got bullied.
now she suddenly is part of a group of extrovert people.

she just cant handle all the interaction currently. she only had negative interaction in middle school, so its hard for her to believe, that people are just nice to her. thats why she always gets "dark" thoughts and instantly starts to doubt herself in every situation.

give her some time. i mean we are at episode 4. of course she cant suddenly drop all the burden she packed from middle school.

@Wrathberry84 Exactly we are at episode 4. The fact that this is a shojo romance means the odds of it getting a second season are pretty low. So assuming we only get 12 episodes, we’ve already spent 1/3 of the show watching her cry the whole time. Of course she’s not going to drop all the trauma from middle school that quickly, obviously not. I’m not even saying she shouldn’t have negative thoughts. But the shy, loser, crybaby trope is annoying af

I felt absolutely the same about every single thing you've mentioned here, especially the crying girl. Also, Did no one has a phone? I mean, yes, there could be no network connection on a mountain, but it's not too bad to try figuring some directions out if they are that lost.

As you've mentioned, there are way too many takes on this episode alone, that it has to be one of the reasons the rating should drop on this anime.

@sarybelle i kinda still find her adorable xD i have something for characters like her and miyo from my happy marriage. even if my wife is the polar opposite of them xD. but for me i think its more my fatherly feelings that i want to protect them and then im happy when guys like the sword dude from happy marriage and the blond dude here show up like white knights to protect them from all evil in the world xD.

im so damn bad with names its emberassing btw... i mean for real, i just binged my happy marriage untill the latest episode and i still dont remember any names besides miyos xD

The soundtrack is so overly melancholic. I swear if you listen for it during scenes with any tension it gets so eerie and has no business in a hitch school romance lmao.

Takamine was also super out of pocket. He was so dramatic but it plays right into Uka’s insecurities.

@Wrathberry84 Well with my last sentence, I meant Miyo and Ishimori are the exceptions. Usually I'm fine with characters that are quiet/shy (I like Tohru from Fruits Basket, Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke, Yuki from A Sign of Affection, Shouko from A Silence Voice), but the problem is these two characters are infuriatingly so. Sure, I understand where they're coming from with their background and what they've had to endure, but it's still frustrating to watch Miyo and Ishimori repeatedly doing dumb things and to watch the surrounding characters having to do a bunch of lifting in order to support them.

After 4 episodes, I realized what I personnaly dislike about the show. It feels like every episode is trying to be the deepest thing ever. Every episode, we get the dramatic music, Ishimori acts like her every action has dire consequences, and the show tries to look good, but it lacks a distinct identity. I can't help but compare to other stuff, like Skip and Loafer for the visuals, Fruits Basket for the drama, and My Happy Marriage for the protagonist, and this show is weaker than those previous 3 (I dislike a lot of parts of My Happy Marriage, but at least it's very pretty and sometimes cozy). It's just so average, to me. I need some balance between the drama and non-drama parts, this feels like eating literally just a steak for diner, while Fruits Basket is a full meal with some delicious green beans and mashed potatoes, and S&L is a perfect, light soup.

Woow I never thought people would dislike Honey Lemon Soda, let alone someone like Ishimori.
Ishimori doesn´t deserve the hate she is getting.
She was bullied nonstop in her previous school and some of you pretend she can forget it in few weeks?
Really?
Is completly normal the way she is acting. I don´t understand the hate at all.
And this anime is supossed to be a school romcom, maybe is just not your type of story but why hating.
I love the friendship in this anime and I want to see how Ishimori and Kai are together.
Ayumi and Ishimori´s friendship is adorable.

With bad weather and treacherous mountain roads, Uka upholds her own responsibility trying to help everyone find a way out, though Miura senses her usual facade to warrant helping her on his own accord. This is where Uka's usefulness proves critical to help the rest of her classmates in need, and Miura giving her his lemon soda whilst finding the elusive "tree shaped like a heart" legend at the same time, her feelings are showing profusely, and Miura is extending that feeling towards her secretly, which might be too good of a feeling.

With the class covering her desk with snacks as thanks, and the girls getting all interested by Kai's past by looking into their yearbooks, it is trauma, but a good one to get to know her classmates better. Obviously, this still raises some doubts that Uka would get along with the others, and Miura affirms her feelings that she's not left out of their virtue of kindness. Even the girl apologizing to Uka that she manipulated the trip, and Takamine reaffirming the relationship between her and Miura being close for some reason, it gets worse when the latter is questioned if Serina Kanno was his ex from his past.

The double-edged sword to affirm Uka from Miura and the gang that she's alright after having a cold for a day, to the trip photos that Ayumi clearly knows of her being interested in Miura, as well as the young man himself complimenting her smile, the appearance of Serina Kanno will change everything going forward.

In this episode, Miura gets much closer to Ishimori, hugging her and even using her as a pillow for his head… Quite strange. Also, why is Ishimori so hesitant about their relationship? I hope she asserts herself just as Miura is doing now.

The scene where she brings simple gifts for Ishimori is really cute! I hope future chapters show more sides of Ishimori’s character.
I love slice-of-life works.

Oomph, so far I'm not as into this series as much as I'd like to be. It's earnest and I'm knocking this for that, but the more serious moments aren't as compelling as they could be. I think this sort of heroine was done much better with "Kimi ni Todoke" a la the outcast girl being accepted by the people around her (excluding the past bullying plotline). Also, the serious bad boy type that Miura is loses my interest, since these sort of guys usually feel flat. It doesn't help that he doesn't feel much like a character and more the love interest who exists in the story to be Ishimori's knight-in-shining-armor. It's a tad too forced and showing the mangaka's hand too much. I'm hoping there'll be more revealed about him that will flesh him out more and that the remaining two-thirds of this will improve my opinion of the series.

EDIT: I could not relate less to the amount of people doing the work of Ishimora's bullies in this comment section. The girl got bullied for years and just started out at a new school. Give her the time to adjust and improve herself not to mention she's a teenager jfc

As a manga reader, my problem with the anime is that they decided to make the characters mostly lifeless and bland. They particularly watered down Kai. I'm hoping the anime will pick up over the next few episodes.

Huh, that's interesting to hear! It doesn't help that Kai sounds so bored all the time (not going to put that against the VA, since he's just doing his job/what the voice directors are telling him) and also I'm personally over shoujo love interests who act indifferent and then will get angry at the girl, but I haven't read the manga. I'm guessing that he likely still has the same personality, but at least has more nuance in the manga (?). That's what I'm waiting for with him (ex. there being more to his past or him having an outer shell that hides who he actually is underneath), but maybe that's wishful thinking on my part.

I get what the episode was going for—building bonds with her classmates to help Uka shed her weak self—but yeah, it felt super forced and unnatural. And it’s not even the first time the show’s done this. If it keeps going like this, it’s hard to stay positive about it.

Uka’s character isn’t exactly shining either. There’s not much redeeming or likable about her right now. Like, girl, no one’s judging you—get out of your own head already. And then there’s Kai, always showing up like some knight in shining armor, saying and doing things for her, fueling the romance angle when it doesn’t even seem like he feels the same. Just… meh.
